Steve Spurrier and Marcus Lattimore preview the upcoming season as part of the 2012 Media Day. Here are highlights from Sunday's press conference.
A roundup of news and notes from Sunday's media day press conference with South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier:
... Spurrier said freshman DB Rico McWilliams' knee injury suffered Saturday night will likely require surgery.
... Spurrier called Marcus Lattimore one of the best running backs in the nation, "if not the best."
... Spurrier said Lattimore and Shon Carson, who both had knee surgeries, are back to normal.
... Spurrier praised quarterback Connor Shaw and backup Dylan Thompson as capable signal-callers: "We're pretty confident we've got two quarterbacks who can get the ball in the air to our receivers."
... Spurrier on Thompson: "He's big, 6'3, can run, and make all the throws."
... On how the wide receivers position could shake out this season, Spurrier said: "The best receiver gets the most balls thrown at him."
... Spurrier said he is still hoping for the return of the passing game. "That would be fun wouldn’t it? Seeing the ball going in the air and somebody catching it."
... Spurrier on the expectations of this season: "We hope we're going to be better. We believe we're going to be. ... We know we have a chance for a good year but we don’t know if we’re going to have a good year or not."
... Spurrier on the tight end depth: "We've never had the kind of tight ends we have here right now." He called Jerell Adams a "big-time talent."
... Spurrier said he may go for it more and fourth down (as he did last year) if he can't find a consistent punter.
