Will Sport has earned praise from offensive line coach Shawn Elliott for his effort, attitude and versatility.
Sport, named a most-improved offensive lineman in the spring, was listed on the second team at left guard behind A.J. Cann entering the preseason.
At 290, he’s put on 20 pounds since arriving at South Carolina from Pace High in Milton, Fla. The 6-foot-5 redshirt freshman hopes to eventually get to 300 pounds.
Never miss a local story.
You played tackle in the spring? Coach Elliott moved you to guard, right?
He had me switching back and forth because we were kind of short. Now that we’ve got some more guys coming in, I can get at guard and stay there.
You played tackle in high school. How does guard in college compare?
It’s a lot different. When you’re inside you’ve got to get low and you’ve got to be strong. I’m trying to adjust to it.
Coach Elliott has praised your versatility, saying you could play any position on the line. How about center?
I’ve never done center but if he needed me there I would try it.
You were named a most-improved lineman in the spring. What did you do to earn that?
I just went out in the spring with a different mindset than I had last year. Last year I redshirted. This year I am trying to play. I went out there and did the best I could.
How does weight training in college compare to high school?
It’s a lot more intense. They’ve got so many strength coaches in there to make sure you get all your reps. They stay on you. It’s helping. The summer workouts were great.
You’ve faced off plenty of times against Jadeveon Clowney. What’s that like?
It’s tough but it helps. He’s pretty good, so going against him just makes me better.
What’s it like going against those big defensive tackles?
It’s a lot different. It’s a little harder but I’ve got to get used to it.
Where are you in the rotation?
I’m getting up there. I don’t think I’m there yet. I’ve got to keep working at it. I’m getting close.
Any lessons learned from teammates such as Brandon Shell or Mike Matulis?
Always be ready. Mike got thrown in there midseason last year. I try to learn from that. Somebody could go down at any second. Just stay ready.
