Fourteenth-ranked South Carolina practiced in preparation for Arkansas on Tuesday and GoGamecocks.com was there. The highlights:
* Jadeveon Clowney did not practice due to his strained rib muscle. He spoke after practice, saying what Steve Spurrier said earlier in the day – his decision to sit out against Kentucky was handled badly.
He should have notified the trainer earlier, and had better communication with the entire thing. Clowney has heard the criticism against him and brushes it aside, saying that people’s opinions are their own, but they aren’t around the team and in the locker room every day to see what’s really going on.
"I didn't sit out," Clowney said. "I could have sat out. I am not looking to sit out. I am not that type of guy. I am here for the team."
Never miss a local story.
He wants to play, he has played through pain before, and while he does have a future in front of him, he’s looking forward to getting back on the field for USC.
When that may be is the question. He was out of practice again on Tuesday. He doesn’t know if he’ll be able to play against Arkansas because of the injury, but is receiving treatment twice a day. He hopes to be able to play but if he can’t, he can’t.
* Grady Brown said that the team is looking at defensive switches, but didn’t have any specifics. As to if the speculation that Victor Hampton may be one of the re-assigned players, Brown said that Hampton’s mistakes against Kentucky were just a case of re-stressing to him to play the assignment.
* Players who did not practice or wore yellow jerseys were: Clowney (rib muscle), Kaiwan Lewis (leg infection), Devin Washington (concussion), Brandon Wilds (dislocated elbow), Cody Waldrop (sprained ankle) and Mike Matulis (shoulder).
* The Gamecocks will practice again at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. It is closed to the public.
