Williams-Brice Stadium is getting re-dressed. The facility has undergone numerous cosmetic changes since Steve Spurrier took over. The latest is an 85-foot banner of Spurrier on the west side of the stadium – a week after workers posted a new garnet sign with the school’s logo from the top. A portrait of Spurrier on the sideline, headset on and playsheet in hand, will stare across Gamecock Park and Bluff Road. The phrase, “Steve Spurrier, winningest coach in Gamecock history” is printed below the picture.

The banner is expected to be in place on Friday.

Lorenzo Ward said Thursday that the Gamecocks have been studying Texas A&M’s tendencies for about four days. Any concerns?

“The concern is making sure we all know what we’re doing and we play fast next Thursday,” he said. “We’ve shown them just about 98 percent of the stuff that they do, and they’re getting familiar with it. We’ll really go in starting on Saturday.”

No problem

Shawn Elliott said Cody Waldrop’s oblique strain (he has missed three days of practice) isn’t a worry and that Waldrop should be ready for A&M. He is slated to start at right guard.

“I think that he’ll be out there next Thursday,” Elliott said. “He’s a tough guy, he’ll be back.”

Redshirt junior

Will Sport has had a terrific camp and could earn playing time. He has been practicing at right guard while Waldrop has been sidelined and was also in the mix at center.

“Will Sport has done a really good job,” Elliott said. “He’s probably had as good a camp as anybody that we’ve had up front for us. To tell you the truth, he was in the mix to play the center position. Will could have probably started at center for us.”

Tough break

Ward spoke about former Gamecock DeVonte Holloman. Holloman, with the Dallas Cowboys, sustained a second neck injury in a preseason game and might be forced to give up football.

While Ward sympathizes with Holloman, he has offered him a safety net. If he can’t play anymore, USC would love to have him.

“If he’s released, you could see him on this field sometime next week,” Ward said. “We’ve got a spot for a graduate assistant, so that’s a possibility. If he’s released, he could be here next week.”

Steve Spurrier Jr. identified his receiver rotation for A&M.

The top four are Shaq Roland, Pharoh Cooper, Nick Jones and Damiere Byrd. Shamier Jeffery and K.J. Brent will be Nos. 5-6, while Kane Whitehurst and Carlton Heard will be 7-8.

Hit the books

Classes at USC began on Thursday. The Gamecocks list 19 seniors this year.

Injury report

Players who did not practice or wore yellow jerseys were TE K.C. Crosby (right foot), DE Blake McClain (foot), OL Brock Stadnik (knee), DE Michael Washington (back), DE Devin Washington (hamstring), OL Mike Matulis (left knee), CB Jamari Smith (left foot), DE Mason Harris (oblique), C Cody Waldrop (oblique) and OL Donell Stanley (wrist).

The Gamecocks will take Friday off and practice at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. It is closed to the public.
