Just the facts
... South Carolina had never won more than four straight in the rivalry before the current five-game run. Gamecocks did not lose over a six-game stretch from 1949 to 1954, but that included a tie in 1950.
... Dylan Thompson (3,031) needs 176 yards to break Todd Ellis’ school record for passing yards in a season (3,206).
... Steve Spurrier is getting ready to coach the 400th game of his football career. He's 272-125-2 in his time with Tampa Bay (USFL), Duke, Florida, Washington (NFL) and the Gamecocks.
... Spurrier is 7-5 in 12 contests against Clemson. He was 1-2 as coach at Duke and is 6-3 as the Gamecocks’ coach. He is 3-3 in Clemson’s Memorial Stadium.
... Clemson coach Dabo Swinney won his inaugural rivalry game in 2008 as the Tigers' interim coach. He received the full-time job a day later and hasn't beaten the Gamecocks since.
... South Carolina is 2-2 on the road this season and is 14-7 in its last 21 true road contests.
... USC -- OUT: DE Cedrick Cooper (ankle), RG Mike Matulis (knee), CB Rico McWilliams (concussion). QUESTIONABLE: DT Abu Lamin (car wreck). PROBABLE: WR Pharoh Cooper (ribs), RB Mike Davis (shoulder).
... Clemson -- PROBABLE: QB Deshaun Watson (knee). DOUBTFUL: TE Jay Jay McCullough (suspension).
Five key numbers
... 1: Clemson’s national rank in total defense. The Tigers are giving up 252.4 yards per game.
... 26: South Carolina’s national rank in total offense. The Gamecocks average 461 yards per game.
... 146.5/213.5: Clemson’s rushing yards per game/USC’s rushing yards allowed per game.
... 112: Number of meetings between the two schools. Clemson has won 65.
... 5: Consecutive wins by USC in the series. The Gamecocks have never had six.
- David Cloninger
South Carolina WR Pharoh Cooper against Clemson's defense. Cooper ranks second in the SEC with 58 catches and 921 yards. Cooper has shown himself as a versatile force — rushing, passing and catching touchdowns against Tennessee. But Clemson is second nationally in pass defense, giving up just 151 yards a game through the air. Cooper has missed early-week practices with a ribcage injury, but is expected to play.
Players to watch
... SOUTH CAROLINA: RB Mike Davis looks to join older brother — and former Clemson tailback — James Davis with three wins in the rivalry. Mike Davis has 888 yards rushing this season and can join Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers as the only South Carolina runners with multiple 1,000-yard seasons.
... CLEMSON: DE Vic Beasley leads the ACC with nine sacks. He's had only one, however, in Clemson's past five games. All signs point toward freshman QB DeShaun Watson (knee) playing. But how much?
