1. New Name
Yes, it’s now officially called “The Palmetto Bowl.” USC and Clemson ADs Ray Tanner and Dan Radakovich made a joint announcement this week. A trophy and logo will be developed and unveiled prior to the 2015 game.
2. The Rivalry
USC and Clemson will meet on the football field for the 112th time, dating back to 1896. This is the 106th consecutive year the teams have played, the second longest active streak in the nation. (Minnesota and Wisconsin have played 107 straight.)
Never miss a local story.
3. The Streak
The Gamecocks will be trying to extend their school-record five-game winning streak against Clemson to six games. USC has outscored Clemson 155-71 during the streak. Prior to the current run, USC had won four in a row once (1951-54).
4. Where’s Watson?
Clemson is waiting on whether star freshman Deshaun Watson will return as starting quarterback. Watson is recovering from an injured knee. He returned to practice this week, but coach Dabo Swinney said he has not decided if Watson will play.
5. Thompson’s Mark
USC quarterback Dylan Thompson is 176 passing yards away from the school’s all-time single-season yardage mark, Todd Ellis’ 3,206 yards set in 1987. In 2012, Thompson filled in for Connor Shaw and led USC to a 27-17 win.
