The central promenade at Gamecock Park outside the University of South Carolina’s football stadium soon will bear the name of a Gamecock football legend.
The University of South Carolina’s board of trustees on Friday approved naming the area after Tommy Suggs, a former USC football player who played quarterback on the program’s only conference champion. The USC football team walks down the Garnet Way and through Gamecock Park and lines of fans ahead of each home game.
The Gamecocks won the 1969 ACC title with Suggs as quarterback. He has worked as a color analyst on USC football radio broadcasts since 1973.
The naming is in recognition of significant giving by the Suggs family over almost a 50-year period.
