I enjoyed talking to Goose Creek High School offensive lineman Brandon Shell on Wednesday at his school.
Shell, who is considered a four-star prospect by Rivals.com and a five-star prospect by Scout.com, seems like a very level-headed, humble kid. But the highlight of my trip was watching about eight of Shell’s classmates trying to work up the courage to snap a cell phone picture of Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
Saban was at the school Wednesday and was meeting with Shell and Goose Creek head coach Chuck Reedy when he was spotted by the boys through a small window in Reedy’s door.
“This is unreal,” one said.
Never miss a local story.
I don’t think anybody ever got the courage to stop long enough to snap a picture despite the $1 bounty placed on it. Saban left Reedy’s office to get on a plane and fly to Memphis for a recruiting visit and was scheduled to fly back into Charleston on Wednesday night to have his in-home visit with Shell.
Steve Spurrier will visit Shell’s school and home Thursday. Maybe the Goose Creek crowd will have better luck with their photography then.
We’ll have plenty more in The State and at GoGamecocks.com on Shell in the coming week, including the story already online where Shell says he’s still committed to South Carolina but also still is considering Alabama.
