One day of spring practice is in the books, and Stephen Garcia already has stolen the headlines.
South Carolina’s senior starting quarterback was suspended for the first week of spring practice by head coach Steve Spurrier. You can find all the details on that in a story in The State and on GoGamecocks.com.
I’m going to use this space today, and hopefully every day after spring practice, to give you my thoughts on some of the things we don’t touch on in our other coverage.
The thing that made the biggest impression on me was Tuesday’s announcement that Damario Jeffery is moving to weak side linebacker and DeVonte Holloman is moving to Spur.
Never miss a local story.
Jeffery looked and sounded like a linebacker when I talked to him Tuesday. His move, if it carries over to the fall, will make linebacker one of the Gamecocks’ deepest positions in 2011. If Shaq Wilson and Rodney Paulk are 100 percent healthy as expected and with Quin Smith making strides every day, the Gamecocks might have trouble finding enough snaps at the position.
Another thing that struck me Tuesday was how happy Akeem Auguste is to be back at cornerback. Auguste told me he considers his junior season, which he spent at safety, “a waste.” We’ll have more on that later in the week on GoGamecocks.com and in The State.
Don’t forget to shoot me questions on Twitter @JoshatTheState during the practices, and I’ll try to answer as many as I can.
