South Carolina released its post-spring practice depth chart Monday, revealing few surprises and another clue that quarterback Stephen Garcia eventually will return to the team.
Garcia, a senior serving an indefinite suspension, is listed as the co-starter along with sophomore Connor Shaw. Head coach Steve Spurrier said last week that Garcia “hopefully” will return to the team, and former Gamecocks wide receiver Tori Gurley, who has worked out with Garcia, said Monday he believes Garcia will return.
There weren’t any major surprises on the depth chart at any spot. At wide receiver, veterans Jason Barnes (senior) and D.L. Moore (junior) remain the starters at the spots not occupied by Alshon Jeffery in the three-receiver set, but sophomores DeAngelo Smith and Ace Sanders, who had good spring practices, are right behind Barnes and Moore.
On the offensive line, the only unfamiliar name is redshirt freshman A.J. Cann, who is listed as the starter at left guard, where he took almost every snap this spring.
Never miss a local story.
The defensive line depth chart remains the same as it was entering spring practice, with Devin Taylor and Melvin Ingram the starting ends and Travian Robertson and Aldrick Fordham the starting tackles. Incoming freshman Kelcy Quarles is a second-team tackle.
The only surprise at linebacker is that junior Damario Jeffery, who was switched from spur the week before spring practice, is listed a third-teamer instead of a second-teamer. Reginald Bowens and Quin Smith are the top backups behind starters Shaq Wilson and Rodney Paulk.
In the secondary, freshman Martay Mattox, who made a splash briefly when moved from cornerback to safety, has been moved back to cornerback at least on the depth chart, where he is a third-teamer.
Sophomore Jimmy Legree is the starting free safety alongside strong safety D.J. Swearinger.
