South Carolina will be getting a little more love Saturday I imagine when the Associated Press’ preseason Top 25 is released.
The Gamecocks were ranked No. 12 in the coaches’ preseason poll, their highest preseason ranking ever in that poll, and probably will reach another milestone when the AP poll is released. South Carolina has never been ranked higher than No. 14 by the AP entering a season. That distinction came in 1959.
The Gamecocks haven’t been ranked at all by the AP entering a season since 2002.
While we wait to see where South Carolina ends up in this year’s voting, I’ll let you take a peak at my ballot, which I submitted Sunday. We’ll save the debate about whether or not organizations should release preseason polls at all for another day, and I’ll just say I based my ballot on what I think the final poll will look like.
Never miss a local story.
As the season goes on, I’ll vote strictly on who I think are the best teams on that day. That could make for some wild fluctuations through the years, but I don’t believe folks should be married to a preseason vote.
If LSU looks a ton better than Alabama in the first two weeks, I’ll swap them without any hesitation, and the same goes for any of the team’s on the list. A lot of you who are on my chats have asked me to make preseason predictions, and I keep declining. I realize, though, that this ballot gives some of that away.
As for the Gamecocks, I think they’ll be good, very good even, but I clearly am not picking them to win the conference or I’d have them in Alabama’s spot.
That may change after a couple weeks. We’ll see. Take a look at this poll and see what you think.
