Clearly, the most interesting and most well-read thing we wrote Wednesday was about Jadeveon Clowney’s signature, but I wanted to make sure you didn’t miss the list we ran on GoGamecocks.com about USC’s summer strength superlatives.
While the school did not release numbers, it still gives us an idea of who stands out in what. Here are the things about the list that surprised me:
Quarterback Brendan Nosovitch is the third-quickest on the team in the pro shuttle. I know the Gamecocks aren’t really recruiting quarterbacks who can’t move at least some, but I didn’t know Nosovitch was that quick. Will the upcoming Nosovitch vs. Connor Mitch for starting quarterback competition (whenever it might come) be a case of feet (Nosovitch) vs. arm (Mitch)?
Walk-on wide receiver Carlton Heard’s name shows up a lot. He had the best vertical jump on the team and one of the best five broad jumps. Does it mean he’ll contribute this year? No, (we haven’t heard his name that much otherwise), but he’s a heck of an athlete.
Never miss a local story.
Walk-on wide receiver David Wilkins led the broad jump category, making three walk-on wide receivers on the list including Heard and Kane Whitehurst (second fastest). Nice wide receiver walk-on program they’ve got going there.
The fact that Jadeveon Clowney is among the top five in vertical jump and power clean is impressive, but it’s not like Clowney’s name dominates the list as some people might have expected. It’s another indication to me as to how freakish Clowney is genetically, which we will explain in our GoGamecocks the Magazine that comes out Aug. 29.
