Former South Carolina linebackers coach Kirk Botkin is expected to join South Carolina State’s coaching staff as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator as early as this week.
Botkin spent four years as a member of Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks coaching staff but was not retained after Spurrier resigned at the end of last season. His imminent hiring at S.C. State was confirmed by a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the hiring is not complete yet.
Botkin played four years in the NFL before beginning a coaching career that has included stops at Arkansas, South Carolina and Jacksonville State as well as two high school positions.
He becomes the sixth member of Spurrier’s 2015 staff to find a new job in coaching, joining offensive line coach Shawn Elliott (South Carolina), defensive co-coordinator Lorenzo Ward (Fresno State), defensive co-coordinator Jon Hoke (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), defensive line coach Deke Adams (East Carolina) and special teams coordinator Joe Robinson (Texas Tech).
Quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus, wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. and running backs Everette Sands have not yet landed other coaching jobs.
