Devan Downey needs a nickname. And quickly, before he graduates.
In anticipation of his senior season, Downey’s summer work has included finding another name by which to call himself . According to Dion Bethea, his former AAU coach and still a close confidant, the South Carolina point guard has been looking for “something cool,” that incorporates his speed, scoring and heart.
So far, nothing has quite stuck.
Most fans have called him Double-D, but Downey is apparently looking for something a little more creative.
Never miss a local story.
Kobe Bryant’s “Black Mamba” nickname was an inspiration. After doing some research, the first one Bethea came up with “Camel Spider” because of its combination of speed and deadliness. But it doesn’t have much of a ring to it.
Some of the latest ideas being thrown around: Mighty mouse, atom ant and small wonder.
My own suggestion was “Lil Pain,” since Downey’s favorite rapper is Lil Wayne, and well, obviously opposing coaches and players would consider Downey to be a pain.
Of course what do I know: I was skeptical about the Garnet Army, and the name stuck.
Anybody got any other suggestions?
