Miami’s effective zone defense against USC on Sunday could lead to worries that future opponents will play copycat.
But Gamecocks coach Darrin Horn isn’t convinced that it is a major issue for his team. He said previous opponents have played it this season. And besides that, Horn thinks the loss of Dominique Archie was the biggest factor in the 85-70 loss.
“That’s something (playing against zone) obviously we can get better against. But they played that the first eight minutes too,” Horn said. “We were playing pretty daggone well. Everybody’s played us zone so far. We’re still scoring and played well.” ...
One bright spot for the Gamecocks was the shooting of Ramon Galloway. The freshman guard made four 3-points, including 3 in the first half to help keep USC in the game.
Never miss a local story.
Galloway had gone 1-for-11 from beyond the arc the first four games. ...
The Gamecocks completed a stretch of five games in nine days.
“There’s no question we’ve been through a lot in the last nine days. Part of that was by design, and again I think we responded well,” Horn said. “We’ll definitely get some rest, get regrouped, get re-focused academically here at the beginning of the week.”
