The Gamecocks basketball team added a pair of junior walk-ons on Wednesday, Shane Philips and Alex Irwin, to fill out a roster with 10 scholarship players.
Philips, a 5-foot-10 guard from Pittsburgh, was a walk-on who practiced with the team in 2008-09 -- Darrin Horn's first season of coaching at USC. He also has practiced with the South Carolina women's hoops team.
Irwin is a 6-foot-4 forward from Richmond, who played college ball at Sewanee. He scored fours points, dished five assists and grabbed six rebounds in eight games for the Tigers two seasons ago. Irwin also played on the Sewanee golf team.
Philips and Irwin are not expected to dress for games, though Horn said he would not make a final decision until practices start next month.
About 15 players tried out for the team last week.
In addition to the new walk-ons, Horn expects to have point guard Bruce Ellington back on the team after the football season ends.
Ellington chose to play football this year after leading the Gamecocks in scoring during last season's 14-16 campaign.
