Frank Martin prefers to have continuity on his men’s basketball staff, but he is happy for former assistant Brad Underwood’s promotion as the new head coach at Stephen F. Austin in Texas.

“I’m ecstatic that the work we’ve tried to do over the past six years was recognized by the opportunity that is in front of him at Stephen F. Austin,” Martin said. “He’s going to do great.”

Underwood was the associate head coach under Martin last year at South Carolina and served under him previously at Kansas State.

There is no rush to fill the open position, yet his phone has been buzzing with interest, Martin said.

“I’ve got to go find someone that fits who we are and helps us get to that next place,” he said. “There are people in the business that I have tremendous relationships with that I’m going to reach out to and see if there’s an interest there.”

Underwood replaces Danny Kaspar, who left after last season to become the head coach at Texas State. Kaspar had been the head coach at SFA for 13 seasons and last season led his team to a 27-5 mark and a berth in the NIT.
