New Jersey wide receiver Damiere Byrd is officially part of South Carolina’s football team.
The 5-foot-9 speedster did not get his paperwork to the school on Wednesday’s National Signing Day because he was traveling to Japan to be part of a Team USA Juniors track meet. He has a time of 10.42 in the 100-meter dash and could be an immediate boost to the Gamecocks’ return game.
Byrd gained more than 1,500 yards as a senior at Timber Creek Regional High School, and he was rated a four-star prospect and the nation’s 19th best wide receiver by Rivals.com.
Byrd’s signing means South Carolina has received 27 letters of intent during the signing period.
The Gamecocks are allowed to sign one more player between now and May 31 and are saving that spot for Rock Hill defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who is expected to make his collegiate choice known on Feb. 14.
