Shaq Roland's goal for his senior season at Lexington High is simple: win a state championship.
A goal for this summer is to decide on where he'll play college football. Doing so, he says, will help him enjoy his senior year more and keep his focus on a title for the Wildcats.
Roland (6-2, 180) has gone from 40 or more scholarship offers to a final four - in no particular order, he says - of South Carolina, Alabama, Florida and Georgia. He will visit the Gators and Bulldogs this summer.
South Carolina was his first scholarship offer, in the summer going into his sophomore season. Brad Lawing is his recruiter for the Gamecocks.
As a junior playing wide receiver and kick returner, he accounted for more than 1,700 yards from scrimmage and 39 touchdowns. He also plays safety.
In college, “wide receiver would be my first choice. If not, then DB,” said Roland, who scored two touchdowns in limited action Saturday in Lexington’s spring game.
Roland is the consensus top football player in the state for this season and a standout in basketball as well. He’ll decide this summer if he’ll play two sports in college (USC and Florida have offered in both).
He is rated No. 63 overall in the country by Rivals.
Roland talked to GoGamecocks this weekend about the months ahead.
