Football prospects hit town for USC’s big recruiting weekend

South Carolina will roll out the garnet and black carpet this weekend for most of its committed football players and several top targets for the class of 2014.

South Carolina will roll out the garnet and black carpet this weekend for most of its committed football players and several top targets for the class of 2014.

Approximately 20 prospects are expected on campus Friday through Sunday for official visits as part of the Gamecocks’ annual “big recruiting weekend.”

Recruits and their families will get an up-close look at academics, athletics, facilities and the campus. The turnout and importance are comparable to previous years, said recruiting coordinator Steve Spurrier Jr.

“We have a couple of uncommitted guys who are coming in that we’re excited about recruiting and getting them around all the other committed players,” Spurrier said. “The weather should be pretty good, and we’ll get to the basketball game. It will be a good weekend.”

While coaches will get one-on-one time with each player, committed players such as Bryson Allen-Williams, KC Crosby, Donell Stanley and Shaq Davidson will be have plenty of time to interact with targets Wesley Green, Chris Lammons, Damian Prince and Dexter Wideman.

Having those commitments ready and willing to sell the high points of South Carolina to undecided prospects is one of the most valuable parts of the weekend.

“What a difference it makes to be around your class,” Spurrier said. “This is your class. You guys are going to represent the class the next four or five years.”

An NCAA “dead period” of no contact allowed between coaches and players ended this week. This weekend marks the first time in a month that official visits can take place. For an official visit, USC covers expenses related to travel, meals, lodging and entertainment.

A highlight of the weekend comes at halftime of the USC men’s basketball game, when Steve Spurrier and members of the 2013 football team take the court and celebrate last season’s 11-2 finish. The audience will include the class of 2014 prospects who are on their visits.

South Carolina has 18 commitments, with most of those expected on campus this weekend. The Gamecocks could take up to four more pledges in the coming weeks. National Signing Day is Feb. 5.

Along with most of the commitments for the 2014 class, USC will host the following targets on official visits this weekend:

•  DB Wesley Green of Lithonia, Ga. | Former USC commitment is down to the Gamecocks and Georgia. He will visit Athens officially in the coming weeks. He is expected to announce before signing day.
•  DL Dexter Wideman of Saluda | Current Florida State pledge has visited USC unofficially many times and is a candidate to flip to the Gamecocks on signing day.
•  OL Damian Prince of Forestville, Md. | Highly regarded lineman is down to USC, Florida and Maryland, and plans to visit the Gators as well. A decision will come on signing day.
•  DB Chris Lammons of Plantation, Fla. | Former Florida commitment likes the Gamecocks and Wisconsin. A signing day announcement looks likely.
