South Carolina basketball coach Frank Martin continued his work Sunday toward adding another piece to his team for 2018 while taking a step forward with an in-state prospect for 2019.
Lehigh grad transfer Brandon Alston (6-foot-5) finished up his official visit Sunday night without finalizing a decision, and 6-foot-11 2019 Ridge View center Malcolm Wilson was in for an unofficial visit and left with an offer.
Alston drove in with his parents from his home in northern Virginia to meet with Martin and his staff and check out the program and university. He left with a positive impression.
“Everything was top notch, the people and the facilities,” Alston said. “In terms of Frank’s plan for me, he wants a versatile big guard with experience. He’s one of the top coaches in college basketball. His players think the world of him. I think his personality, character and honesty have gotten him to where he is.”
Alston also drew offers from LSU, East Carolina, Massachusetts, Pacific and Georgia Tech after announcing his transfer plans. He said he will have a decision on his next school Tuesday but did not say who the decision is down to.
As for Wilson, he already had an offer from Clemson and visited there earlier in the week. Sunday was his chance to get over to USC and see what Martin had in mind for him, and that turned out to be an offer.
“Coach Martin is a very straight forward and sincere guy,” Wilson said. “I met him several years ago at church and he still remembered it today. He’s been watching me and I am thrilled by the offer from him. I like that Coach Martin and his staff explained how they develop players and are able to help me reach my potential. Because of that, it is easy to see myself fitting in. Being a hometown team and having a mom who attended South Carolina is also a plus.”
Wilson also has offers from SC State and Hampton but he is in line for several other offers this summer and during his junior season.
▪ South Carolina offered defensive lineman Jordan Davis of Memphis, an Alabama commitment.
▪ The Gamecocks offered 2019 defensive lineman Faatui Tuitele of Honolulu.
▪ USC offered 2020 offensive lineman Bryn Tucker of Knoxville.
