South Carolina already has a commitment from a 2019 Cordele, Ga., defensive standout in linebacker Ahdarrious Gee. The Gamecocks are now working on his 2019 teammate defensive lineman DeAngelo Griffin (6-foot-1, 295 pounds) and offered him over the weekend, the second SEC team to do so following Arkansas.
“It was a great feeling,” Griffin said. “That’s who I wanted my first SEC offer to come from. Coach Mike Peterson coach Travaris Robinson like the way I did at camp and my film was awesome. They love the way I how can move being 300 pounds.”
Griffin said he and Gee are best friends and grew up wanted to attend the same college. Some of his other offers are Wake Forest, Georgia Southern, UAB and Western Kentucky. He had 95 tackles and three sacks last season.
▪ Two more announcements of note this week for USC interests. Offensive lineman Jerome Carvin of Cordova, Tenn., is a USC target but has had Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi State high up on his list. He will announce Wednesday. Defensive end Azeez Ojulari of Marietta, Ga., plans to announce his college decision Thursday. Ojulari has said his decision likely would come from the group consisting of Clemson, USC, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee.
▪ Sunday was a day of good recruiting news for USC basketball coach Frank Martin and his program was included on the short lists of two of his targets, 6-foot-5 Aaron Nesmith of Porter-Gaud and 6-foot-8 Simi Shittu of Vermont Academy. Nesmith is one of the top players in South Carolina for the 2018 class.
Nesmith recently made an unofficial visit to USC and an official visit to Vanderbilt. The Commodores join the Gamecocks on his list of seven. The others are Florida, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Harvard and Yale.
