South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier did not make it to the in-home visit with former commitment Thomas Finnie of Miami Wednesday night, but he did talk on the phone with him at least once on Friday after Finnie switched his commitment to Miami.
USC is still working Finnie. The Gamecocks are hoping to get Finnie on campus for an official visit, something he was supposed to do this weekend before enrolling on Monday. Miami does not start classes until Jan. 18.
Spurrier was supposed to join recruiter Jeep Hunter for an in home visit with the defensive back and his family Wednesday night but canceled. Hunter attended the meeting himself.
Finnie was accepted into USC Friday morning. He and his family were going to drive up from Miami Friday for the official visit.
Never miss a local story.
But he and his father drove to Coral Gables instead, met with Miami head coach Al Golden, and he committed to the Hurricanes.
Miami Central coach Telly Lockett talked again with Finnie Friday afternoon trying to make sense of it all.
"I'm still a little baffled," he said. "I don't know how it happened. Everything was signed, sealed and delivered."
Finnie's departure leaves USC with 26 commitments for the class.
The Gamecocks do plan to scout out another defensive back for the class.
