Two sport standout Anthony Alford of Petal, MS recently announced a final seven schools of USC, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU, Alabama and Nebraska. His coach said Thursday Alford’s interest in the Gamecocks is very real.
“He felt like those are the ones he had a genuine interest in, the ones that will let him play both sports,” Steve Buckley said. “I think Coach Spurrier would let him participate in both.”
Buckley said Alford is open with his final seven schools and is working on his official visits which he might announce by the end of August. USC is recruiting him as a quarterback, “but he can play anything,” Buckley said.
Alford is a highly rated outfielder and USC’s back to back national titles certainly caught his eye. “We’ve also won back to back football championships here at Petal,” Buckley said. USC associate head baseball coach Chad Holbrook was expected to talk with Alford this week according to Buckley.
Ellis Johnson is handling the football recruiting. Johnson and Buckley worked together at Southern Miss.
