South Carolina picked up a commitment Friday from linebacker Kaiwan Lewis of Hammonton, N.J.
Lewis (6-2, 228) is considered one of the top prospects in New Jersey and one of the top linebackers in the country nationally. He picked the Gamecocks over Florida and Florida State.
He called defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward on Friday afternoon to make the pledge. Ward put him on speaker phone for the other defensive coaches to hear. He also talked to Steve Spurrier.
After he made finished that call he phoned G.A. Mangus, his lead recruiter.
Never miss a local story.
"I like all the coaches who are there," Lewis said. "It's a school that me and my family and my coaches all agreed on."
Lewis will play middle linebacker for the Gamecocks.
"I like being the captain of the defense," Lewis said. "I like being an anchor on defense."
Lewis said he is 100 percent solid with his commitment to the Gamecocks.
He is the Gamecocks' 18th commitment for the upcoming signing class and the third linebacker.
