Defensive back Eli Shumate of New Jersey has his sights set on USC for a possible official visit.
Shumate, of Ramsey, N.J., is maintaining regular contact with USC recruiter G.A. Mangus.
“I hear from coach Mangus a lot,” Shumate said. “I call him once a week or every two weeks. He’s saying they really want me, tells me the coaches really want me bad.”
Shumate has a top five of USC, Michigan, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame and Rutgers in no order. He will take his official visits and then come up with a favorites’ list.
He said USC, Michigan and Notre are possible official visits.
Shumate said several factors will come into focus as he makes the choice.
“I’m looking at the academic standpoint of the school,” he said. “I’m looking for a place where I can play and be seen on TV every Saturday. I want to go to a place where they love me and where I have a chance to make an impact my freshman year.
"And I want great coaching," he said. "I want to be coached by the best.”
Shumate said he’ll make his decision in December after his visits but won’t reveal it until the Army All American Game on Jan. 7.
