As September rolls towards October, it appears more and more as if 6-9 Brice Johnson of Edisto, the state's top prospect for 2012, will not sign with either USC or Clemson.
Johnson has not publicly ruled out either team. But he has yet to commit to an official visit to either despite the fact USC's Darrin Horn and Clemson's Brad Brownell made their in person pitch to him last Friday. Johnson has indicated to USC he might visit either September 24th or October 8th. He's given Clemson no such indication.
It could all be a moot point for the Gamecocks and Tigers anyway after this weekend. Johnson will make an official visit to North Carolina this weekend, and the Tar Heels have made it clear to him they want him for their program. Tar Heel coaches visited with Johnson last Friday. Johnson also has visited NC State officially and he's scheduled for a visit to Florida October 1st.
With Johnson slipping out of reach, the Gamecocks are keeping up their interest in 6-10 Tyrone Haughton of Miami, a player they have been recruiting along with Johnson. Gamecock coaches met with him last Saturday. Haughton is also getting interest from Connecticut, Alabama, Marshall, Miami and West Virginia.
Several down the road prospects plan to make unofficial visits to USC Saturday. That group includes 5-10 junior Nick Boulware of Irmo, and sophomores 6-5 LJ Peake of Gaffney, 6-3 Kurt James of Porter Gaud, and 6-2 Marcus Stroman of Keenan.
