DL Peyton Newell of Hawatha, KS said Monday he has narrowed his decision to USC and Nebraska and will announce his choice at his school August 30th. Newell made an unofficial visit to Nebraska Saturday and he hopes to make it to USC for the Showcase Camp in July.
His visit to Lincoln was his third. "I spent a lot of time with coach (Bo) Pelini and with coach (Rick) Kacenski (DL coach)," Newell said. "I toured the facilities and talked to the coaches." Kaczenski was on Lou Holtz's staff at USC from 1999-2001 as a graduate assistant.
Newell said he's in touch weekly with Gamecock recruiter GA Mangus. "I'm trying to gather as much information as I can," Newell said.
Newell said it's even between the two schools and both are recruiting him with the same effort level. He said his decision will come down to "how comfortable I am with each school and which school can get me where I want to go." Which is, of course, the NFL.
