Class of 2014 defensive end signee Jhaustin Thomas of Atlanta and Trinity Valley (Texas) Junior College will not have the grades to be able to enroll at South Carolina this fall, a source confirmed to The State.
Thomas originally signed with the Gamecocks in 2012 but did not qualify then for freshman eligibility. He is the third Class of 2014 defensive end signee who will not qualify: Dante Sawyer (Suwanee, Ga.) and Kalan Ritchie (Goose Creek) both already enrolled at junior college.
Thomas' high school coach said Wednesday afternoon that he planned to talk with him Wednesday night to learn more about his situation.
The Gamecocks continue to wait on the qualifying status of defensive lineman Dexter Wideman of Saluda. His coach said earlier this week they are waiting on a final test score to come back and that it should be about three weeks before they know the result.
The Gamecocks did get good news on fullback Joe Blue of Dillon. According to Dillon coach Jackie Hayes, Blue recently got the news he was fully qualified. The news came too late for him to enroll for the first session of summer school, so he will be enrolling July 2.
