Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Greg Eason carded an 8-under 63 on Thursday and he holds a 1-shot lead following the first round of the Forces and Families Open.
Eason is seeking his first win on the PGA Tour Canada despite coming close multiple times this season. He has missed the cut just once in seven events and his best finish came at the Staal Foundation Open, where he ended in second. Eason also tied for fifth at the Syncrude Boreal Open.
Travis Ross and Sam Ryder are both tied for second after shooting 7-under 64s at Hylands Golf Club.
Michael Schachner and Paul Ferrier are tied for fourth at 6-under 65, while Ryan Brehm, Brock Mackenzie, Kelvin Day, Daniel McCarthy, Clayton Rask, Peter Campbell and Jordan Krantz are all three shots back at 5-under 66.
Eason began his round with back-to-back pars before pouring in his first birdie of the day at the third. Following four straight pars, Eason started to go on his run with three straight gains from No. 8, putting him at 4-under.
Another par at 11 preceded Eason's fifth birdie on No. 12. An eagle at the par-5 13th propelled Eason to minus-7, and two more birdies at 15 and 16 pushed him to minus-9. Eason's lone blunder came at No. 18 as he concluded his round with a bogey at the last.
Ross and Ryder also had one bogey each, with Ross dropping a shot at No. 2 and Ryder's bogey coming at No. 16, his seventh. The duo both added eight birdies to finish the first round deadlocked at 7-under.
NOTES: Order of Merit leader Joel Dahmen, who has won twice on tour this year, is 3-under after one round and he is tied for 20th ... Ross and Ryder are also looking for their first win on tour. Ross has missed the cut in four events, while Ryder has missed three cuts this year.
