Bill Haas has a special feeling for Harbour Town Golf Links and the Verizon Heritage. You might, too, if your very being were a result of the tournament.
In 1977, his father, PGA Tour veteran Jay Haas, and his mother, Jan, met while Jay was playing in the first of his 30 appearances at Hilton Head. Bill is the second of Jay and Jan's five children.
"It'll always be special to me, knowing how my parents met here," the second-year PGA Tour player said. "This is the reason I'm on this earth. And it's been a vacation spot for spring breaks, plus its my 'home course' in South Carolina, even though Charlotte and Atlanta are closer" to his Greer residence.
The younger Haas has played twice before in the Heritage, missing the cut in 2005 (when he was a member of the Nationwide Tour) and tying for 27th a year ago.
Haas finished 99th on the PGA Tour money list last year, winning $887,024. This year, he's had a tie for fifth in the Tour's Mayakoba Classic in Mexico and has won nearly $400,000.
"When I first came out here, I was young and cocky, and (the Tour) humbled me some," he said. "I need to get some of that back. I have the attitude now that I can win, not just play well."
