PGA Tour player Scott Stallings compared his faith to his role as a new father at the Christian Heritage Breakfast on Tuesday at the Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head Island.
Stallings and his wife, Jennifer, travel with their son, Finn, born nine weeks ago.
"He's been on five flights already," Stallings said.
He said his son is totally dependent on them, and the subject of all their love. Yet there's nothing the child has done to earn it or deserve it, and there's little he can offer in return.
Stallings said that is like his relationship with God: that he is like the baby, and God is like the father.
"That's the relationship God wants from us," he said.
Stallings said the baby also helps him keep the game in perspective.
"Whether I shoot a 60 or an 80, when I see (Finn) at the 18th green, nothing else matters," he said.
He said that too is like his faith.
For too many golfers, their identity is wrapped up in their scores.
"I'm more than a golfer," he said. "I'm a father, a Christian, a husband. That score's important, but it's not everything."
