The winter sports season is not over, but postseason accolades have been announced for basketball and wrestling.
The S.C. Basketball Coaches Association has selected two local players among its All-State Players of the Year.
Spring Valley guard and McDonald’s All-American P.J. Dozier was honored in Class 4A.
And, for the second year in a row, Dreher’s Tevin Mack is a Class 3A player of the year. This year, he shares that title with Travelers Rest’s Andrew Brown.
Irmo’s Devontae Shuler and Spring Valley’s Malik Dunbar represent the Midlands on the 4A All-State team. In Class 3A, A.C. Flora’s Karl Gamble, Lower Richland’s Jared Richardson and Airport’s Josh Williamson were honored.
Kendric Gathers of Keenan and Dequan Weldon of Fairfield Central are among the Class 2A honorees.
On the girls side, several area underclassmen garnered All-State honors.
Juniors Christian Hithe of Spring Valley and Destinee Langford of Lexington were chosen along with Irmo’s KeAsia Jackson in Class 4A. Lower Richland sophomore Kameron Roach, Dreher junior Jhileiya Dunlap and Airport junior Shakori Jennings-Shuler are on the Class 3A team.
Keenan junior Leon Hill made the 2A team, and C.A. Johnson junior Kaitlin Pickens is on the Class A squad.
All-Star Classic Several players will be in action for one more high school game in March, as the Carolinas All-Star Basketball Classic games are set to be played at Socastee High on March 28.
Irmo’s Jackson is the lone Midlands player on the girls team, which will play against North Carolina’s all-stars at 6:30 p.m. The team will be coached by Richland Northeast’s Precious Caldwell.
The South Carolina boys team includes Mack, Gamble, Dunbar and White Knoll’s Emarius Logan. They will face the North Carolina team at 8:30 p.m.
Wrestling honors More than a dozen area wrestlers will hit the mats again next week in North Myrtle Beach as North-South All-Stars.
Dutch Fork’s Parker Grizzle, River Bluff’s Hakeem Ferguson, White Knoll’s Austin Palmer, and Lexington’s Michael Manning will compete on the 4A/A South team, facing the 3A/2A South team, which includes Rodney Keeter of Airport and Nick Martini of Chapin.
The 3A/2A North team features Columbia’s Louis Wilson and Kimone Shaw, Richland Northeast’s Javier Moreno and River Bluff’s Levi Wright. That team will take on the 4A/A North squad, which includes Dutch Fork’s Aaron Burton.
Both matches will be contested on March 6 at 6 p.m. The winning teams will compete against each other on March 7 at noon.
