At Bolden Stadium on Thursday, Dreher disrupted C.A. Johnson’s passing game to post a 47-12 win over the host Hornets.
Although the Hornets (2-4) struck first, with Peter Goodman scoring on a 58-yard pass from Mike Knox, three first-quarter touchdowns from Dreher made life difficult for Johnson, and two interceptions did not help matters.
“They’ve got two really, really good players (in Goodman and quarterback Mike Knox) who you’re not going to be able to shut them down completely, but I felt like our guys did a great job of limiting them,” Dreher coach Treigh Sullivan said.
Dreher (4-1) used four minutes to complete its first scoring drive, with Avery Armstrong hitting Bradford Lemmons on a 35-yard catch-and-run to get the offense going. Armstrong capped the effort with consecutive completions, and Isaiah Drayton hauled in the go-ahead touchdown from 9 yards out.
After their defense held Johnson to three-and-out, the Blue Devils needed two more plays to make it a two-possession game.
Taking the handoff at the Dreher 44, Drayton rolled out to the left and carried the Blue Devils to the 1. Armstrong ran the keeper up the middle for the touchdown.
Then with 44 seconds left in the quarter, Dreher struck again, this time covering a 78-yard field with three plays, the last a 55-yard reception by Lemmons.
C.A. Johnson’s ensuing drive was interrupted by Tyler Johnson’s interception, which started another Dreher scoring drive early in the second period. Lorenzo Ward powered the Blue Devils to a 28-6 lead, posting 39 yards on eight carries on the drive.
Johnson coach Jerry Jackson said the Hornets’ passing game was ailing as Goodman was hampered by a stomach bug and two-way starter Knox was dealing with fatigue.
“It gets rough when you ask a guy to do that, and mental fatigue can make you make some mistakes and we had some tonight,” Jackson said.
Charles Mallory’s 9-yard scoring reception chipped into the Hornets’ deficit with three minutes left in the half, and the Johnson defense forced Dreher to turn the ball over on downs on its next possession. But Knox’s second interception negated that gain, with Ross Branch taking the pick 36 yards for another Dreher score.
“We’re going to go back and shore things up and be ready for region,” Jackson said. “We can’t let this kill us.”
For the Blue Devils, Ward finished with 147 yards of offense and two touchdowns, and Armstrong had more than 185 passing yards.
