This week in Region 4-3A football

Is Camden emerging as the title favorite?

Camden (5-1, 1-0 Region 4-3A) vs. Lower Richland (3-3, 0-1)

Site: Zemp Stadium.

Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Camden opened region play with a dramatic 34-33 win over A.C. Flora in Columbia. Josh Sumpter blocked a Falcons PAT kick with 2:48 remaining in the game to preserve the lead, and then Alexx Cooke made two big plays to seal the deal for the resurgent Bulldogs. Cooke recovered Flora’s onside kick and made a tough sideline catch for 16 yards and a first down on a third-and-14 play to make it all but official with 1:48 to go. There were plenty of Camden headliners. QB Denzel Martin was 15-for-25 passing for a career-high 258 yards, including a 79-yard scoring strike to D.J. Wilson. RB Kendrice Slate ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. Cooke caught six passes in all for 124 yards. Safety Nelson Semple had 14 tackles and one fumble recovery Lower Richland took a 22-21 loss to Dreher in its 4-3A opener. Heath Gilmore passes for 152 yards and one touchdown and ran for a team-high 62 yards and one TD, but threw three interceptions.

Series history: Lower Richland defeated Camden for the first time since 1978 last season, but the decision was later ruled a forfeit. The Bulldogs series lead stands at 8-1.

Chapin (3-3, 1-0 Region 4-3A) vs. A.C. Flora (2-4, 0-1)

Site: Cecil Woolbright Stadium.

Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Chapin rallied from a 14-10 halftime deficit to edge Westwood 29-21 last week. The Eagles took control by scoring 19 unanswered points in the second half. The clincher was a 45-yard interception return touchdown by Sam Holaday with 3:11 remaining in the game. Chapin managed only 266 yards on the attack, but did not turn the ball over at all. The defense held the Redhawks to 288 yards and came away with two takeaways, including the game-winner. As usual, linebacker Nate Blakenship and Tyler Weimer led the Eagles hit parade with 12 tackles apiece A.C. Flora has not had much luck in close games thus far. The four Falcons losses have come by a combined margin of just 15 points. Last week’s 34-33 region setback against Camden was the toughest yet. The Falcons are certainly productive enough on offense. Avery Pollard (81-714-5) and JuWan Simon (81-430-8) are solid in the running game. QB Brendan Greene is 30-for-54 passing for 637 yards and nine TDs. WR Denzel Johnson has 21 catches for 518 yards and seven scores. The defense has some good performers, but overall the unit has been disappointingly porous.

Series history: Flora defeated Chapin for the first time in three tries last season.

Dreher (5-1, 1-0 Region 4-3A) vs. Westwood (2-4, 0-1)

Site: Memorial Stadium.

Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Dreher took a big step last week with a 22-21 win over Lower Richland, avenging a loss to the Diamond Hornets last season that presaged the Blue Devils conference collapse. Not this time. QB Avery Armstrong was 22-for-30 passing for 255 yards and one touchdown. WR Bradford Lemmons caught eight passes for 144 yards and one TD. Donovan Ward had 34 yards rushing and one score. Colin Dryden had a critical interception return for a touchdown. In all, Dreher picked off four LR passes. Jaliq Tinsley had two swipes and Josh Scott had the other Westwood is coming off a 29-21 loss to Chapin. RB Christian Brown ran for 116 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. WR Vyncint Smith had a big game with eight catches for 116 yards and two TDs.

Series history: Dreher was a 29-22 winner in the first meeting of the teams a year ago.
