Lower Richland (4-3, 1-1 Region 4-3A) vs. Chapin (4-3, 2-0)
Site: LR Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: Chapin took over sole possession of first place with a 19-18 win over defending region champion, while first-week winners Camden and Dreher stumbled in the second round. The Eagles weren’t flashy on offense, but efficient enough. QB Matt Charpia was 10-for-14 passing for 146 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. He also led the team in rushing with 28 yards (and one TD). Daniel Piester, Matt George and Chandler Engel led the defensive performance with 13 tackles apiece. Piester’s total included five tackles for loss and one sack, plus one forced fumble. George had four stops behind the line Lower Richland went conservative on offense and netted a 28-21 road win at Camden to get back in the title chase. QB Heath Gilmore ran for 94 yards and two touchdowns and netted 70 yards on three pass completions. D’Andre Smith had 66 yards rushing and one TD. In the end, the difference was a 23-yard blocked punt return touchdown by JaVarius McKenzie in the second quarter. Down, 21-20 at halftime, LR put together a 14-play, 57-yard scoring march to take the lead for good, 26-21. The defense added a safety with a tackle in the end zone in the fourth quarter. The Diamond Hornets defense limited Camden to 62 yards in the second half.
Series history: Chapin beat LR for the first time last season, 14-12, after the Diamond Hornets won the first two encounters (2009-10).
Westwood (3-4, 1-1 Region 4-3A) vs. A.C. Flora (2-5, 0-2)
Site: Westwood District 2 Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: Westwood scored its most impressive win to date last week – dominating Dreher 38-3 to ruin the Blue Devils homecoming celebration. The Redhawks defense, led by Raymond Hall’s 11 tackles, limited Dreher to a paltry net of 37 yards on 37 offensive plays. The offense took its cue from Christian Brown who ran 208 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. Brown is now up to 769 yards (7.4 average) and nine touchdowns for the season A.C. Flora’s misery continued last week in a 19-18 loss to Chapin. It was this second straight one-point region loss for the Falcons. Flora’s five losses have been by a combined margin of 16 points. The Falcon’s quest to repeat as region champ is over. Just making the state playoff cut is going to be challenging enough. Aven Pollard ran for 217 yards and one touchdown, but the rest of the offensive managed just 78 yards in support. Dillon Smith had a good game on defense with 10 tackles and one sack.
Series history: A.C. Flora was a 52-6 winner in the first meeting of the teams last season.
Dreher (5-2, 1-1 Region 4-3A) vs. Camden (5-2, 1-1)
Site: Memorial Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: Dreher received rude treatment in a 38-3 loss to Westwood last week. The Blue Devils managed just four first downs and netted 37 yards on 37 offensive plays. The rushing yield was minus-5 yards on 22 carries. The defense was hit for 326 rushing yards Camden is also coming off a region/homecoming loss – 28-21 to Lower Richland. The Bulldogs led 21-20 at halftime but was blanked by the Diamond Hornets in the second half. Running backs Kendrice Slater (114-673-5) and Brandon Hampton (93-523-8) are Camden’s primary offensive weapons.
Series history: Dreher has won two of the last three meetings, but Camden has a commanding 13-3 series lead.
