This week in Region 5-3A football

Swansea hosts Brookland-Cayce with a first-round home playoff game as the incentive.

Swansea (5-3, 2-1) vs. Brookland-Cayce (6-2, 1-2)

Site: Doug Bennett Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Swansea is looking to nail down a second-place region finish and a No. 2 state playoff seed with a win. The Tigers took a 44-21 loss in last week’s first-place showdown with Strom Thurmond. Travis Loadholt ran for 110 yards and one touchdown and receiver Craig Johnson caught three passes for 94 yards and one TD Brookland-Cayce is coming off a 35-24 setback against Midland Valley. QB Zeke Walker ran for 70 yards and three touchdowns and was 6-for-10 passing for 110 yards and Ti Myers ran for 117 yards on 13 carries, but it was not enough for the Bearcats who can secure a playoff spot with a win.

Series history: Swansea has won two in a row to even the series at six wins apiece.

Strom Thurmond (7-1, 3-0) vs. Gilbert (4-4, 1-2)

Site: Strom Thurmond Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Gilbert kept its playoff hopes alive with a 49-28 win over Airport. QB Mitch Spires was 16-for-21 passing for 233 yards and three touchdowns and he ran for two scores. RB Jakayus Leaphart had 106 yards rushing and one TD on 21 carries. WR Raymond Padgett had five grabs for 124 yards and one TD and WR Tristan Register had four catches for 53 yards and two TDs Strom Thurmond spotted Swansea a 7-0 lead and then reeled off 29 unanswered points on the way to a 44-21 win that all but officially assured the Rebels yet another region championship. Since 2003, Strom Thurmond is 50-3 in region games. QB Jauveer Hammond was 12-for-17 passing for 181 yards and two touchdowns and he ran for 117 yards and one TD.

Series history: Strom Thurmond is 5-0 all-time against Gilbert, including a 58-14 romp last season.

Airport (1-7, 0-3) vs. Midland Valley (5-3, 2-1)

Site: Eagle Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Airport must win to keep any hope of a state playoff invitational alive. The Eagles suffered their seventh straight loss last week – a 49-28 decision against Gilbert. QB Kadarius Jackson ran for 171 yards and two touchdowns and had 66 yards passing and one scoring toss. RB Cory Bradley had 118 rushing yards and one TD .., Midland Valley scored a 35-24 home win against Brookland-Cayce. QB Daniel Carr continues to impress. He was 14-for-20 passing for 212 yards and two touchdowns and he ran for 112 yards and two TDs.

Series history: Midland Valley was a 15-13 winner last season but Airport sports a commanding 18-8 series lead.
