This week in Region 4-4A football

Blythewood vs. Irmo winner has the inside track to a second-place finish.

Blythewood (6-3, 2-1 Region 4-4A) vs. Irmo (4-5, 2-1)

Site: Blythewood District 2 Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: The winner has the inside track to securing the region’s No. 2 state playoff seed and an automatic postseason spot Blythewood is fresh from a 52-14 rout of Lugoff-Elgin behind sophomore quarterback David Israel who hit 19 of 30 passes for 370 yards and six touchdowns. Lynard Jamison had nine catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns, and Jacob Rabon has a huge yield on three receptions – 116 yards, two TDs Irmo also aired it out in a 44-13 romp against Richland NE. QB Demetrius Lewis was 15-for-21 passing for 251 yards and four touchdowns. Lewis also ran for 85 yards and one TD on 13 carries. De’ares Nelson caught five passes for 62 yards and two TDs. Manny Banks netted 101 yards but no scores on his four catches. RB Shyheim Copeland chipped in 113 yards and one scoring run.

Series history: Irmo’s 37-34 win last season was the Jackets’ third in as many tries against Blythewood.

Lugoff-Elgin (1-8, 1-2 Region 4-4A) vs. Spring Valley (9-0, 3-0)

Site: Lugoff-Elgin Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Spring Valley can clinch the region championship with a win. The Vikings breezed by Ridge View 35-8 last week with the defense taking center stage. Josh Harlan was credited with 23 tackles. The physical senior middle linebacker leads the Midlands with 131 tackles. Harlan De’marqus Muscove had six tackles, one interception and one PBU in the secondary. The Vikings allowed the Blazers a meager 174 yards and no offensive touchdowns. QB Chris Adams was the prime mover on offense even though he threw just one pass. Adams ran for 166 yards and one TD on 14 carriers Lugoff-Elgin has lost two in a row since beating Richland NE to end a 23-game losing streak. Last week, the Demons took a 52-14 hit last week from Blythewood. As usual, Shon Belton provided most of the highlights with 122 yards on 16 carries.

Series history: Last year’s 35-20 success stake Spring Valley to a 2-1 series edge.

Richland NE (0-9, 0-3 Region 4-4A) vs. Ridge View (3-6, 1-2)

Site: Harry Parone Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Ridge View must win its final two regular season games to rate an automatic berth in the Class 4A state playoffs. The Blazers can’t afford to look past winless RNE to the season finale with Blythewood. RV is coming off a 35-8 loss to undefeated Spring Valley. The Blazers managed just 174 yards against the Vikings defense. RB Walter Napper (179-909-10) and WR Okechi Ntiasagwe (32-408-4) have been the most consistent offensive producers to date Richland NE dropped a 44-13 decision last week to Irmo, allowing the Yellow Jackets to roll for 534 yards. QB Simeon Kelly leads the Cavaliers in rushing (303 yards), scoring (54 points) and passing (792 yards).

Series history: Ridge View was a 38-20 winner last season, but RNE still enjoys a 9-6 series advantage.
