Football: Westwood wins first-ever playoff game

Westwood made history Friday with a 38-10 victory against visiting Woodruff in the first round of the Class 3A state football playoffs.

Westwood made history Friday with a 38-10 victory against visiting Woodruff in the first round of the Class 3A state football playoffs.

The Redhawks (7-5) dominated on both sides of the ball, especially in the second half, in their first postseason outing and will face Greer on the road in second-round play next week.

“This feels fantastic,” Westwood coach Rodney Summers said. “We felt we had a good plan coming in, and it worked for us.”

Offensively, the Redhawks wanted to keep the ball on the ground and keep the ball away from Woodruff’s high-octane passing attack.

Christian Brown led the 360-yard rushing attack with 249 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Chris Patterson ran for 66 yards and was 4-for-6 passing for 93 yards.

Defensively, the Redhawks allowed zero points and 33 net yards in the second half along with two sacks and two interceptions.

Woodruff posted 215 yards passing in a first half that ended with the score tied at 10, but quarterback Keevon Gist was 5-for-12 passing for 10 yards in the second half. Moreover, the Westwood secondary shut out star receiver Blake Bone in the second half after the Kentucky-bound senior produced 129 yards and one touchdown on seven catches in the opening 24 minutes.

“We really didn’t make any adjustments at halftime,” Westwood defensive coordinator Nick Pelham said. “We tried to mix up coverages in the first half, and that seemed to get us off kilter a little bit. We just settled down and played the way we know we can.”

Westwood seized command in the third quarter with two scoring drives capped by Brown runs. The Redhawks opened the second half with an eight-play, 57-yard scoring march after a failed onside kick by Woodruff. Brown’s 4-yard run broke the deadlock and put Westwood ahead for good.

The Redhawks put it away with a 17-play, 95-yard scoring drive concluded by a 1-yard plunge by Brown on the last play of the third quarter.

“That’s the one that put us over the top,” Summers said.

Westwood consumed all but 1:48 of the time in the third quarter.

Brown began the campaign as a starter on defense, but is unofficially averaging 175 rushing yards per game since becoming the go-to man on offense in the fourth game.

“We’ve been doing this consistently for weeks,” said the 5-foot-10, 185-pound senior.

“Teams have been putting nine people in the box, and we’ve still been able to run the ball down their throats. All the credit goes to the offensive line, in no particular order: Marlon Reese, Christopher Mitchell, Anthony Curry, Torrey Boone, James Fannin, Andrew Plante and Terrance Anderson.”
