Fairfield Central enters the new girls basketball season ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, but the Griffins will first have to prove itself in the Region 3-2A campaign against defending state champion Keenan before it can be considered the team to beat.
The Griffins, of course, had a loft ranking last season and finished with an impressive 18-5 overall record. But FC was swept by Keenan in region play and suffered a second-round playoff exit while the Raiders went 5-0 in the postseason tournament.
The team strengths figure to be experience and overall team speed, but the Griffins must improve on the boards to make a serious run at a state title.
Senior Jada Martin is perhaps the top returning player in Region 2 after she averaged 17.9 points, 8.9 rebounds and 5.2 steals last season. Seniors Christian Thompson (6.3 ppg, 5.9 apg, 2.6 spg), Tiea Quanna Pearson (3.2 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.7 spg) and Raven Rivers (7.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.1 spg) and sophomore Chyna Moore (8.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.8 spg) are the other returning veteran players.
Newcomers Jameka Henderson, Tanise Davis, Carissa Alston, De'Lexius Cloud and Patrice Jeter should provided ample depth.
