Gilbert’s boys basketball team is looking for better things after going 4-18 a year ago in its first season at the Class 3A level.
Seniors Jalon Bright (6.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Jon Myles Newman (8.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.0 apg) and junior Thomas Miller (8.0 ppg, 5.0 apg) are the returning starters. Bright is a preseason all-region pick (5-3A).
The top newcomers include junior Garnett Cason, junior Jakayus Leaphart and senior Mitch Spires. Cason missed all of last season with an injury. Leaphart is a transfer who was a star running back on the football team. Spires, the football quarterback, is returning to the hardwoods for the first in several years.
“This Gilbert team will surprise some people this year,” said coach Stewart Kennerly. “This year’s group has some experience and some newcomers have added depth.”
The first order of business is to turn things around in region play. The Indians have gone winless in three straight conference campaigns and are mired in a 35-game region losing streak.
