Mark Kirlough enters his 20th season as the boys basketball coach at Columbia High with high expectations.
“This should be one of our strongest teams in quite some time,” said Kirlough who has 283 wins on the books at CHS. “We have no definitive go to guy yet, and that’s a possible weakness. Our strength should be depth – we have 10 seniors and nine returning varsity lettermen. There is also a really good group of juniors will be pushing those returning players.”
In other words, Columbia could be poise for a breakout season. The Capitals went 11-13 last season and are 85-125 over the past nine seasons. The last big campaign was a 22-6 showing in 2003-04.
Seniors Isaiah Cooks (8.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg), Thomas Allen (5.0 ppg, 2.3 apg) and Rayqwan Conyers (5.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.8 bpg) are the top veterans. Allen, a point guard, is a four-year varsity man.
Junior guards Terry House and Terrell Blocker are among the promising newcomers.
