A'ja tallies tournament record 56 points

Heathwood Hall's A'ja Wilson breaks Ivory Latta's CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational single-game scoring record, but the Highlanders blow an 11-point lead in the final eight minutes and fall in the tournament fifth-place game.

A record-setting performance by A’ja Wilson was enough to lift Heathwood Hall over St. Joseph Central Catholic (WV) Saturday in the fifth-place game at the CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational girls basketball tournament in Myrtle Beach.

Wilson fired in a single-game tournament record 56 points, but the Highlander blew a 60-39 lead in the final 8:-05 of the game to close with a 2-2 tournament record and a sixth-place finish in the elite field.

The 6-foot-4 senior sensation was 19-for-22 from the field, 18-for-22 at the free throw line, grabbed 21 rebound and blocked three shots to close out a memorable stay at the beach.

Wilson’s 56 points topped the record of 53 set by by former York and University of North Carolina great Ivory Latta in 2002. Wilson also finished with tournament records in total points (167) and rebounds (83).

Gadsen Lefft (9 points, 6 rebounds) and Chelsea Joseph (7 points, 7 rebounds) had solid game in support of Wilson.
