As, expected, ShaLeighya Sulton did not waste time reaching the 1,000-point career plateau last week at the Chapin Claw Classic girls basketball tournament.

Needing 16 points to achieve the career milestone, the 5-foot-10 senior rang up 34 points in Chapin’s 79-33 first-round win over Swansea on Friday. Sulton finished with 64 points in three tournament games and carries a 20.5 season scoring average into the 2014 phase of the season.

Chapin went 2-1 at the tournament, bouncing back from a semifinal loss to Wilson to whip neighboring Mid-Carolina 58-26 in the third-place final. Sulton led the way with 18 points and had 12-point backing from freshman Hannah Davis.

The Eagles (9-4) return to action on Jan. 4 for a non-region home outing against Airport.

Richland Northeast and Gilbert closed out the Claw Classic with Saturday wins. RNE capped a 2-1 showing with a 47-40 win over Laurence Manning Academy in the fifth-place game, while Gilbert salvaged a 1-2 tournament showing with a 43-31 win over Swansea in the seventh-place game.
