Defending Class 4A state champion Irmo squares off against top-ranked Gaffney on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Dorman Classic II championship game.
The Yellow Jackets (9-1) are riding a seven-game losing streak since losing to Dorman in a preseason tournament championship game in November. Irmo advanced to the DC bracket title game thanks to wins over Georgia teams Collins Hill and Hillgrove in the first two round on Friday and Saturday.
Irmo was ranked No. 1 in the preseason coaches poll with Gaffney at No. 5. The teams swapped places in the first regular season poll that was released on Dec. 17.
The game features two of the top-five players in Class 4A – Irmo’s Javis Howard and Gaffney’s L.J. Peak, a Georgetown signee who is ranked in the top 50 by both ESPN and Rivals. Howard had a double double (23 points, 12 rebounds) in the Jackets’ 65-52 win over Collins Hill. Peak had 38 points in Gaffney’s easy first-round win, and rang up 37 points and 15 boards in the Indians’ 80-77 semifinal overtime win over Effingham County (NC).
