Heathwood, Westwood girls win in Charleston

Heathwood Hall and Westwood emerged with championships at the massive, 64-team Carolina Invitational Girls Holiday Tournament in Charleston.
Heathwood Hall (9-3) rolled past Salem VA 58-41 to claim the Patriot Division championship on Sunday at St. John’s High. A’ja Wilson led the Highlanders with 33 points, 19 rebounds and 14 blocks and was named the division MVP. Teammate Victoria Dickerson also landed a spot on the all-tournament team.
Westwood, which entered the tournament with a 0-6 record, ran the table in the Battery Division at James Island High. The Redhawks capped the 3-0 performance with a 46-41 win over North Myrtle Beach in the championship game on Sunday.
Juniors Kaylah Cohen, Kayla Atkins and Anah Livingston led the way for Westwood. Cohen tallied 20 points, Atkins chipped in 15 points and Livingston contributed five points, two assists and seven steals to the cause.
Westwood advanced to the championship game with wins over Augusta Christian and Christiansburg VA.
Hammond went 2-1 and finished in third place in the Battery Division, securing consolation honors with a 51-45 win over Christiansburg. The Skyhawks (6-3) opened the tournament with a win over Seneca before falling to North Myrtle Beach in the semifinals.
Cohen and Hammond’s Ahlea Myers and Amelia Green were named to the all-tournament team.
Ridge View, the other Midlands entry, went 0-3 in the Patriot Division, falling 40-38 to Bell Multicultural in Sunday’s finale.
