LR girls top Irmo in tournament finale

Lower Richland avenged its only loss of the season on Monday, whipping Irmo 52-35 in the championship game of the Bank of York/Wing Bonz Christmas Tournament in York.
It was the first loss of the season for Irmo, which handed LR a 52-49 loss in the semifinals of the A.C. Flora preseason tournament in Novemeber. This time, it was a different ballgame.
The defending Class 3A state champion Diamond Hornets (8-1) limited the Yellow Jackets to two points in the first quarter and steadily pulled away from there.
Tournament MVP Breshay Johnson was the dominate for in the game with 25 points and five rebounds. The senior center was 7-for-7 from the field and went 11-for-12 at the free throw line.
Freshmen Kameron Roach (9 points, 3 assists, 2 steals) and Caliah Hicklin (10 points, 8 rebounds) provided solid backing.
Ke’Asia Jackson led Irmo (10-1) with 10 points, while Jada Morgan tallied eight points.
Lower Richland is off until opening Region 4-3A play on Tuesday at Chapin. Irmo is off on a weekend road trip to Charleston to face James Island (Friday) and West Ashley (Saturday).
