Region 5-4A basketball season begins

Lexington and Dutch Fork look to challenge North Augusta for the conference boys championship. Dutch Fork eyes a second straight girls region title.

The championship races in Region 5-4A basketball begin tonight with three varsity doubleheaders.

North Augusta, ranked No. 9 in the most recent Class 4A coaches poll, is the team to beat with Lexington and improved Dutch Fork as the other top contenders. Dutch Fork may be without Alaina Coates, but the Silver Foxes are the pick to repeat as region champion.

Tuesday’s first round games include Lexington at North Augusta, Dutch Fork at South Aiken and Aiken at White Knoll.

The Lexington boys have won six in a row and nine of 10 to bring a 12-4 into the conference opener. The December highlight was a 4-0, championship run at a blue-chip tournament in Florida.

Lexington’s girls team has struggled with two wins in nine outings so far.

Dutch Fork’s boys team sports a 9-5 record, the girls are 5-6.

White Knoll’s boys at 7-8 with the girls checking in at 3-6.
