Irmo High basketball coach Tim Whipple has been named South Carolina’s coach of the year.
Whipple, who has won five Class 4A state championships as coach of the Yellow Jackets — including this past season — received the award from the National Federation of State High School Associations Coaches Association. He has coached at Irmo for 33 seasons.
“It’s an honor to be recognized,” Whipple said. “In terms of things we’ve accomplished as a team, our state championships definitely rank high, but in terms of an individual award, we are humbled and honored by the federation’s recognition. I think it points to the quality of players that we’ve had an opportunity to coach and to the quality of Irmo High School.”
