Third-ranked Lexington travels south on Saturday to face No. 2 Summerville in the Class 4A Lower State wrestling championship match. Originally scheduled for Friday, the final 4 match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
It is the fourth straight year the defending state champion Wildcats have made it to the state semifinal match. Lexington beat the Green Wave 33-25 in last season’s LS finale on the way to securing the program’s first state wrestling titles.
Summerville (32-1) has defeated Lexington two times during the regular season by counts of 33-32 and 38-29.
The once mighty Green Wave program is second only to Rock Hill in state championship trophies (15-11) and state playoff dual wins (69-64), but Summerville has not claimed a state title since 2008. The current five-year slump matches the longest championship drought in program history.
Lexington (29-6) is healthy for the first this season and primed to rate a state title shot for the fourth year in a row.
The Wildcats pulled away from Ashley Ridge in Monday’s third-round match, breaking a 19-19 tie with five straight wins at the end. The decisive run featured decisions by Blake Risinger at 152, Michael Manning (170) and Daniel Bannister (182) and a major decision by Ryan Sinnott (160). Bannister’s 12-5 win made the outcome academic. The final points came of a forfeit picked up by Andrew Carnes at 195.
The rest of the Wildcat points came via decisions by Aaron Austin (220) and Jackson Myers (126) and pins by Brennan Shealy (120) and Andy Szalwinski (132).
